Shaw Brothers - the best martial arts movies. So you've got a passing interest in martial arts cinema. You've got a couple of Bruce Lee DVDs and you've just discovered Jackie Chan's 1. It's all going quite well, in a few months you will be tucking into Jet Li's Fist of Legend and probably some of Sammo's finest works (Warriors Two, The Victim). However, one thing keeps nagging away at you. Who or what are the Shaw Brothers? You keep hearing people ramble on about them on various online forums and their logos seem to be all over the place (including Tarantino's Kill Bill). Well, if this is a question burning inside you, then you have come to the right place. Here at Hong Kong Cinema, we have tried to pull together an insightful and informative guide into the world of the Shaw Brothers for both the uninitiated disciple and those looking to extend their basic knowledge. It is fair to say that the Shaw Brothers have been the most significant film production company in the history of Hong Kong Cinema, with an influence extending far into international cinema. Over the last nine decades, the Shaw's have amassed a collection of over 8. They gave openings to some of Hong Kong's best loved stars (Jimmy Wang Yu, Lo Lieh, Ti Lung, David Chiang, Gordon Liu, Alexander Fu Sheng and Cheng Pei Pei), but also those behind the camera (Chang Cheh, Lau Kar Leung, John Woo and Chor Yuen). Not only were they breaking box office records both domestically and abroad, but they also defined a number of genres that are now considered the very essence of Hong Kong cinema. Game of Death - Wikipedia. The Game of Death is an incomplete 1. Hong Kong martial arts film directed, written, produced by and starring Bruce Lee, in his final film attempt. Lee died during the making of the film. Over 1. 00 minutes of footage was shot prior to his death, some of which was later misplaced in the Golden Harvest archives. Most of the footage that was shot is from what was to be the centerpiece of the film. During filming, Lee received an offer to star in Enter the Dragon, the first kung fu film to be produced by a Hollywood studio (Warner Bros.), and with a budget unprecedented for the genre ($8. Lee died of cerebral edema before the film's release. At the time of his death, he had already made plans to resume the filming of The Game of Death. After Lee's death, Enter the Dragon director Robert Clouse was enlisted to finish the film using two stand- ins which was released in 1. Golden Harvest. Original film. They tell him the story of a pagoda where guns are prohibited, and under heavy guard by highly skilled martial artists who are protecting something (which is not identified at all in any surviving material) held on its top level. The gang boss wants Hai to be a part of a group whose purpose is to retrieve said item. They would be the second group to try to do so as the first attempt with a previous group had failed. When Hai refuses, his younger sister and brother are kidnapped, forcing him to participate. Hai, as well as four other martial artists (two of which were played by James Tien and Chieh Yuan), then fight their way up a five- level pagoda, encountering a different challenge on each floor. The setting of the pagoda was at Beopjusa temple in Songnisan National Park in South Korea.

This '90s kung fu film takes a rifle through his childhood for a fictional yarn detailing. The pagoda, called Palsang- jon, is the only remaining wooden pagoda in South Korea. At the base of the pagoda they fight 1. Karate. While inside the pagoda, they encounter a different opponent on each floor, each more challenging than the last. Although his allies try to help out, they are handily defeated, and Hai must face each of the martial artists in one- on- one combat. He defeats Filipino. Eskrima master Dan Inosanto, Korean. Hapkido master Ji Han- jae, and finally Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, who fights with a free and fluid style mirroring Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Because Abdul- Jabbar's character has great size and strength in addition to a fighting style as potent as Lee's, he can only be defeated once Hai recognises that an unusually high sensitivity to light is his greatest weakness. Despite all the talk of something awaiting up top of the (now unguarded) flight of stairs, there is no mention of anyone going up to retrieve it. No surviving material explains how this will affect Hai or his captive siblings. Hapkido master Hwang In- Shik was slated to play the guardian of the first floor, a master of a kick- oriented style, while Bruce's long time student and good friend Taky Kimura was asked to play the guardian of the second floor, a stylist of praying mantis kung fu. The goal of the film's plot was to showcase Lee's beliefs regarding the principles of martial arts. As each martial artist is defeated (including Lee's allies), the flaws in their fighting style are revealed. Some, like Dan Inosanto's character, rely too much on fixed patterns of offensive and defensive techniques, while others lack economy of motion. Lee defeats his opponents by having a fighting style that involves fluid movement, unpredictability, and an eclectic blend of techniques. His dialogue often includes comments on their weaknesses. Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey. The documentary also includes a fairly in- depth biography of Lee and leads into the filming of The Game of Death. Fans still believe there is more footage to be found. Originally meant to be a documentary in its own right, now it can be found on the second disc of the 2. Special Edition DVD release of Enter the Dragon, along with the documentary Bruce Lee: Curse of the Dragon. Bruce Lee in G. O. D.: Shib. This film shows Lee's original vision of the film through the existing footage that was shot for the film before he died, interviews, and historical re- enactments of what went on behind the scenes. The film stars Bruce Lee, Kim Tai- jong, Yuen Biao, Gig Young, Dean Jagger, Colleen Camp, Robert Wall, Hugh O'Brian, Dan Inosanto, Mel Novak, Sammo Hung, Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Ji Han- jae and Casanova Wong. The 1. 97. 8 version uses portions of the original footage married to an entirely new plot involving a new character, Billy Lo (. When Billy refuses to be intimidated by syndicate henchman Steiner (Hugh O'Brian) and his gangs of thugs, syndicate owner Dr. Land (Dean Jagger) orders his assassination to serve as an example to others. Disguised as a stuntman, Land's assassin, Stick (Mel Novak), sneaks onto the set of Billy's new film, and shoots Billy during filming. A fragment of the bullet passes through Billy's face, leaving him alive but in need of plastic surgery which alters his facial features. Billy takes the opportunity to fake his death and disguise himself, exacting revenge against those who wronged him one at a time. When the syndicate threatens and kidnaps his fianc. In the revised film, Bruce Lee's fight scenes inside the pagoda are assumed to take place in the upper floors of the Red Pepper restaurant, where Dr. Land and his thugs have laid an ambush. In the end Billy survives the ambush, rescues Ann, and destroys each of the main mobsters one- by- one. Production. The plot of the film allowed Kim and Yuen to spend much of the film in disguises, usually involving false beards and large, dark sunglasses that obscured the fact that they bore little resemblance to Lee. Many scenes, including fight scenes, also included brief close- up bits of stock footage of the real Bruce Lee from his pre- Enter the Dragon films, often only lasting a second or two. These clips are easily recognisable due to the difference in film quality between the old and new footage. At one point in the movie, real footage of Lee's corpse in his open- topped casket is used to show the character Billy Lo faking his death. There is even a scene, taken place in Billy's dressing room, where a cut- out of Lee's face was taped to a mirror, covering the stand- in's own face. Several actors associated with previous Lee movies were included in the re- shoot for the final 1. For example, Robert Wall, a villain in both The Way of the Dragon and Enter the Dragon, plays a kickboxer named Carl Miller who must battle with Billy Lo. Sammo Hung, who appeared in Enter the Dragon, served as the fight coordinator for the re- shoot of Game of Death, and also appears in the scene as a ring opponent for Miller. To maintain continuity with the fight footage taken from the original film, Dan Inosanto (renamed Pasqual) and Ji Han- jae (whose character was unnamed and was not shown until near the end of the film) were given small parts as additional enforcers for the syndicate. Kareem Abdul- Jabbar refused to participate in the re- shoot, with another tall African- American stand- in (renamed Hakim) included instead. Although Chuck Norris is credited as starring in the film, his role is limited to clips from Way of the Dragon inserted into the film. The film quality of the Clouse- directed footage was noticeably higher than that of Lee's earlier Hong Kong films, and John Barry provided an original soundtrack. The film also featured performances by experienced actors as well as up- and- coming stars, including two recipients of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (Dean Jagger and Gig Young) and several who have been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, including Bruce Lee, Dean Jagger, Chuck Norris, Hugh O'Brian, and Gig Young (in his final film). For Chinese- speaking audiences, the film was dubbed into Cantonese and Mandarin, and had significant changes, such as the inclusion of a fight in a greenhouse with Casanova Wong and a different opening and closing credits sequence, featuring a new theme song, plus a couple of minor scenes. Unlike the English version, they use Lee's actual battle sounds. Several scenes were removed, also, including the fight in the opera house dressing room. In the original Hong Kong version, the fight with Ji Han- jae is included (during the middle of the film though), whilst the ending did not show Billy Lo being arrested. Instead, both he and Ann share their good- byes to Jim as they appear to depart Hong Kong on a boat. The Singaporean version ended with Billy's arrest, and it did not feature the Ji Han- jae fight. This is the version commonly found in Chinese. The Mandarin dubbed version of the film featured a different theme song to that of the Cantonese version. The theme song sounded familiar to the main theme of Way of the Dragon. This version also included the scene where Billy and Ann share their good- byes to Jim. The Cantonese dubbed version shows the commonly found scene where Billy is arrested by the police. Theme song. Criticism of the revised version included the inclusion of scenes that could be considered in bad taste, such as the incorporation of footage of Lee's actual funeral. Another scene, often pointed out by critics of the film, involved a shot of Kim looking at himself in the mirror, with an obvious cardboard cut- out of Lee's face pasted onto the mirror's surface. Apart from the cheesy techniques used to disguise the fact that Lee was being played by stand- ins, the movie enjoyed respectable production values. Bey Logan points out a few logic issues with the 1. In order for the henchmen to remain low key, they should be wearing more casual clothes instead of the multicolored tracksuits seen at various parts of the film. But as a rationale, this explains why Lee wears the yellow tracksuit. Also in the fight between Lee and Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, the scene near the vase in Logan's opinion appears to look choppy along with the short fight with Hugh O'Brian. Batman (1. 96. 6 film) - Wikipedia. Batman (often promoted as Batman: The Movie) is a 1. American superhero film based on the Batman television series, and the first full- length theatrical adaptation of the DC Comics character Batman. Released by 2. 0th Century Fox, the film starred Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. The film hit theaters two months after the last episode of the first season of the television series. The film includes most members of the original TV cast, with the exception of Lee Meriwether as Catwoman, the character previously played by Julie Newmar in two episodes of the series' first season. When Batman and Robin get a tip that Commodore Schmidlapp is in danger aboard his yacht, they launch a rescue mission using the batcopter. As Batman descends on the bat- ladder to land on the yacht it suddenly vanishes beneath him. He rises out of the sea with a shark attacking his leg. After Batman dislodges it with bat- shark repellent, the shark explodes. Batman and Robin head back to Commissioner Gordon's office, where they deduce that the tip was a set- up by the United Underworld, a gathering of four of the most powerful villains in Gotham City (Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman). The United Underworld equip themselves with a dehydrator that can turn humans into dust (an invention of Schmidlapp, who is unaware he has been kidnapped), a submarine made to resemble a penguin, and their three pirate henchmen (Bluebeard, Morgan and Quetch). It is revealed the yacht was really a projection. When The Dynamic Duo return to a buoy concealing a projector, they are trapped on the buoy by a magnet and targeted by torpedoes. They use a radio- detonator to destroy two of the missiles, and a porpoise sacrifices itself to intercept the last one. Catwoman, disguised as Soviet journalist . After Wayne escapes captivity, Penguin disguises himself as the Commodore and schemes his way into the Batcave along with five dehydrated henchmen. This plan fails when the henchmen unexpectedly disappear into antimatter once struck: Penguin mistakenly rehydrated them with toxic heavy water, used to recharge the Batcave's atomic pile. Ultimately the Duo are unable to prevent the kidnapping of the dehydrated United World Organization's Security Council. Giving chase in the batboat to retrieve them (and Miss Kitka, presumed by the duo as still captive), Robin uses a sonic charge weapon to disable Penguin's submarine and force it to surface, where a fist fight ensues. Although Batman and Robin win the fight, Batman is heartbroken to find out that his . Commodore Schmidlapp accidentally breaks the vials containing the powdered Council members, mixing them together. Batman sets to work, constructing an elaborate filter to separate the mingled dust. Robin asks him whether it might be in the world's best interests for them to alter the dust samples, so that humans can no longer harm one another. In response, Batman says that they cannot do so, reminding Robin of the fate of Penguin's henchmen and their tainted rehydration, and can only hope for people in general to learn to live together peacefully on their own. With the world watching, the Security Council is re- hydrated. All of the members are restored alive and well, continuing to squabble among themselves and totally oblivious of their surroundings, but each of them now speaks the language and displays the stereotypical mannerisms of a nation other than their own. Batman quietly expresses his sincere hope to Robin that this . The duo quietly leave United World Headquarters by climbing out of the window. Lee Meriwether acted as Catwoman in the film (pictured), replacing Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman in the first two seasons of the television series. The film includes most members of the original TV cast: the actors for Batman, Robin, Alfred, Gordon, O'Hara, Aunt Harriet, the Joker, the Penguin, and the Riddler all reprised their roles. Though Julie Newmar had at this point played Catwoman in her debut episode of the TV series, she had other commitments at that time. According to the 2. Biography special celebrating the character of Catwoman it was said that Newmar was unable to reprise her role due to a reported back injury. Catwoman was nonetheless played by Newmar once again in the following eleven episodes of season two of the series; Eartha Kitt would then play the character in three episodes on season three. In his autobiography, West writes of his asking for more money to do the film and that the producers countered with the fact that another actor would be hired. Batman was Denny's final film appearance. Jack La. Lanne has a cameo as a man on a rooftop with bikini- clad women. The studio, 2. 0th Century Fox, refused because it would have to cover the entire cost of a movie, while it would only have to share the cost of a TV series (a much less risky proposition). It was written by series writer Lorenzo Semple, Jr. Martinson had directed a pair of the television series episodes: . They felt the film's depiction of the Caped Crusader . The movie, like the TV series, is strongly influenced by the comparatively obscure 1. Batman, such as the escapes done almost out of luck. However, the majority of Batman's campier moments can be read as a broader parody on contemporary mid- 1. The inclusion of a glory- hunting presidential character and the unfavorable portrayal of Security Council Members marked Batman's first attempts to poke fun at domestic and international politics. This is a list of the characters from the Showtime comedy-drama series Dead Like Me. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D. C., the fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive. Alex laments posting . Gareth has no reply. One of the marauders taunts them by saying . They quietly build weapons using scraps stripped from their clothes and the car's interior. Their captors release tear gas into the car, catching them off guard. The first to be slaughtered is Sam – the young man Rick and Carol met on a supply run before Carol's exile. At first Rick refuses to comply, but after Gareth threatens to stab Bob in the eye, Rick admits it's filled with weapons, including rifles, handguns, a compound bow and a machete. Of the latter, he tells Gareth, . They hear gunfire erupt and watch a herd of walkers flock toward the noise. Carol and Tyreese hear him mention the group and on his walkie- talkie and hold him at gunpoint. Tyreese, meanwhile, keeps watch on Martin in the cabin. Martin tries to convince Tyreese to take his car and leave with Judith. She fires at a propane tank within Terminus, then launches one of Martin's fireworks toward the breach, setting off a massive explosion. Walkers begin to swarm into the building and killing its residents. He frees himself and fights his way out with Daryl, Glenn and Bob. Carol, disguised as a walker, infiltrates Terminus with the herd. Chaos reigns as walkers feast on Terminus residents. Carol takes advantage of the confusion and shoots down Terminus snipers. Rick tells his group that if they come upon any other Terminus residents they should kill them without hesitation. They hear someone screaming and banging from a storage unit. But when they do, a deranged man runs out screaming wildly before a walker attacks him. She retrieves Rick's watch – which he had given Sam - - and Daryl's crossbow. Mary confronts her and they struggle. As Carol gains the upper hand, Mary explains that Terminus used to be a real sanctuary until a group of marauders raped and killed her people. The lesson, Mary explains, is . Martin gets a hold of Judith and threatens to kill her unless Tyreese steps outside. Tyreese complies, and Martin listens to his shouts as the walkers attack. Martin then goes to check if Tyreese is still alive; Tyreese bursts through the door and pummels Martin. Outside, the ground is littered with walkers Tyreese killed hand- to- hand. The Walking Dead Season 7 is about to bring more action to fans of the AMC show in Episode 7 with a more detailed look inside the sanctuary that the Saviors call home. I wanted to watch this show but the gay mean killed it for me i stopped the moment their segment came on damn all this gay business. He says his team devised a system that could kill all humans on the planet — and that same system might be able to kill off the walkers. Newly reunited, they fight their way out of Terminus. He insists they go back to kill the remaining Terminus residents, but the others disagree. Daryl runs up to Carol and hugs her tightly, both of them share tears of joy seeing each other being alive and well. Rick and Carl sprint over and joyfully reunite with the baby, while Sasha embraces her brother. Rick decides that they will get as far away from Terminus as possible. Abraham intends to tell Rick about their mission but not yet. The group follows the railroad tracks until they happen upon a Terminus sign. Rick crosses out most of the text and modifies it to read, . He throws Mary into the car and selects a young woman, who is dragged off to be raped again. Gareth comforts Mary but as he tells her its alright the man backhands him across the face with a flashlight and informs Gareth, . He stops to see the Terminus sign Rick modified, and hangs his head. He removes his mask. It's Morgan. He starts to follow a series of markings on trees - a circle with an X inside - to an unknown destination. It is unknown who it was that left the signs. The group are on the road once again and decide to take a break. As Glenn and Maggie share a tender moment, Tara approaches Rick. That’s why I tried to talk to you. He's thankful she saved Glenn and welcomes her into the group, and even accepts her offer of a fist bump. Carol and Tyreese are filling water bottles from a creek and talk about whether the group will accept Carol for killing Karen and David at the prison. Carol says they don't have to accept it, but Tyreese insists that they do. Tyreese states that they don't have to tell them about Lizzie and Mika as he feels that explaining what happened to Mika and Lizzie might be a tougher sell and that he wants to forget what happened. Michonne says she's got it, and reaches reflexively for the katana that she lost to Terminus. Sighing, she takes it out by striking it with her gun and bashing its head in with the butt of her gun. Abraham sees this and tells Rosita, . Carol responds, . He tells Carol he saw the Terminus residents murder Sam. He offers her watch back, but she refuses. Rick admits some regret at sending her away, to which she responds, . You were right. But after a long silence, she says she doesn't want to. They both hear a noise and get up to look. Daryl says it’s nothing, but something is watching them and moving around. Daryl comes out of the woods with some squirrels he caught. Daryl mentions to Rick he didn't see any tracks of what was watching them from last night. Abraham starts trying to talk Rick into his plan, innocuously suggesting they find a road and go north until they find a vehicle. For example, . There, they find a man up on a rock surrounded by walkers. The group dispatch all of the walkers and immediately forms a perimeter. Rick tells the man he can come down and he does. He asks if he’s okay and the man throws up, apologizes, thanks the group, and introduces himself as Father Gabriel Stokes to the distrusting group. Gabriel says he has no weapons and that The Word of God is the only protection he needs, which gets a cynical, . Gabriel says he called for help and God answered with their arrival. He asks for food and Carl offers a meager handful of pecans. Gabriel says Judith is a beautiful child. When pressed by Rick, he says he has a church. Rick makes him put his hands above his head and starts searching him for weapons, asking him the 3 questions from the prison. We’ve all done something. But those sins I confess them to God, not strangers. Gabriel says he keeps to himself because people are just as dangerous as the dead. People are worse. Gabriel says that the rock was the furthest he’s been from his church since it started, but then starts defiantly joking that maybe he’s lying and leading them into a trap so he can steal all of their squirrels. Rick cautiously asks to go in the church first so they can . Inside Carol finds a book on a desk that shows Gabriel, or someone, has been copying the Bible by hand. He’s written . Rick finds empty food cans around the altar. Glenn, who almost got the group hurt by releasing the crazed man previously, finds a a picture with the words of Galatians 6: 9: . For in due season we will reap if we do not give up. Rick calls the rest of the people in. Abraham suggests fixing the church’s short bus and taking it to D. C. Michonne wants to rest and gather supplies first, though, and Rick agrees. Abraham looks like he wants to object, but Glenn tells them that one way or another they’re following Rick and not splitting up. Tara adds a . Inside, Gabriel says he’s been living off the food from the church’s annual canned food drive and scavenging. He says he’s cleaned out every place nearby except for one that’s overrun by about a dozen walkers. Bob and Sasha agree to go with Rick to check it out and Tyreese agrees to babysit Judith. Rick thanks Tyreese for his help. Before he leaves, Rick has a talk with Carl. Carl says he does trust Gabriel because he feels that everybody can't be bad. Rick tells Carl that Gabriel may have friends and he needs him to stay to help Tyreese protect Judith. Rick tells Carl that no matter what, he's not safe and makes him promise to never let his guard down. Before he leaves, though, Carl calls Rick back. He tells him that they are strong enough that they can still help people, and that they don’t have to be afraid or to hide. However, Rick still believes that Gabriel is hiding something. Bob is trying to talk Rick into going to Washington. He notes a double meaning of Rick's words that the Terminants . Although Rick is not even sure he’s going to go, Bob is convinced that Eugene can cure the virus and that things will go back to something like the way they were. Rick says this is the real world and Bob says . And nightmares end. Carol is reluctant to talk about what happened when she was separated from the group. Daryl says they can start over and that Carol saved them, but she just says they got lucky. They come to an abandoned car and Carol checks it out. The car's battery appears to be dead, but Daryl interrupts her as she's checking the trunk. Let’s start over. Carol says she wants to, and Daryl says she can. Inside the trunk Carol finds an emergency starter. She pushes a button on it and shows its got a little battery power left, so she says they should leave the car for backup in case things go bad at the church. The door is kicked in and they both agree the chances of leftovers are super slim. There’s a noise from inside and they draw their guns. Glenn comes out and admits he tripped over a stack of boxes and mop, and that he found three silencers stashed in a mini- fridge inside. They draw their weapons and go inside cautiously. There’s a huge hole in the floor. It leads to a basement filled with water and stinky, decayed walkers. Sasha suggests using some metal shelves in the muck to block the walkers and Rick agrees it’s a good plan. Inside, the water is up to their waists. Gabriel sees a walker that looks like a church lady with big glasses and panics. He tries to get up the stairs but the stairs break. The others push down the shelves and fight their way through the walkers to save Gabriel. Ogg plays Simon, the right- hand man to Savior leader Negan. Nacon is Enid, a teenage resident of Alexandria who has shown a connection to Carl. Mc. Intosh plays one of the newest characters on the show, Jadis, leader of the junk yard scavengers. Season 7 of the series saw the departure of several main cast members, including Steven Yeun and Michael Cudlitz, whose characters, Glenn and Abraham, were killed in the season opener. Sonequa Martin- Green, who played Sasha, died in the season finale. She will next star in the CBS All Access series “Star Trek: Discovery.”Season 8 will pick up amidst the war between Rick’s alliance and The Saviors. Series showrunner Scott Gimple previously said that the season will see Rick and company battling to preserve the very fragile civilization they have established.“It’s essentially for the whole world as far as their experience,” Gimple told Variety when the season concluded. It’s the Kingdom and the Hilltop too. The Governor just wanted them dead. Negan would be happy if everyone was alive and well and working for him. There’s a very basic political idea at play here. They want to live in a fair world instead of having it just be Negan’s. To that end, that idea feels to me like the beginning of civilization is at stake, this new civilization they want to build rather than live this strange half- life serving a despot.”TVLine first reported this news. But in truth, the 1. Extension of a Man” was written by Edward Howard about the mental pain he saw Hathaway experiencing. The song meant so much to Hathaway that he cried upon hearing the final mix. More than 4. 0 years later, Sasha too finds catharsis in it in the Season 7 finale of “The Walking Dead.”Sasha listens to it en route with the Saviors to spill the blood of one more Alexandrian. Having caught wind of the Alexandrians making moves, he wants to kill three people as punishment, but Sasha is able to talk him down to just one casualty. She has him wrapped around her fingers, although he insists it’s not a “man- woman” thing. The Alexandrians are prepared for the visit after Dwight’s “apparent” betrayal. He warns of Negan’s arrival and offers to set up some roadblocks to slow the Saviors down. This gives Rick and co. The Hilltop is on standby, and unbeknownst to Rick, Ezekiel and his regiment are en route to join the cause. All this preparation is for naught, however, after a capital- s Shocking twist in the form of another betrayal. Eugene leads the Saviors’ cavalry to Alexandria’s gates and makes a plea for Rick to fall back in line. Conflicted, he asks where Negan is. Eugene is Negan, he says. This seals his fate, or seems to, at least, as Rick gives the nod for Rosita to set off the dynamite. But it fails, and Jadis puts a gun to Rick’s head and the rest of the Scavengers follow suit. It was her crew who tipped off the Saviors, so we can spare at least some of our ire toward Gregory, who is still a scumbag but less of a scumbag than we thought. The surprise gives Negan a chance for another one of his monologues. He taunts Rick once again and outlines his demands: all the guns, all the lemonade, a sacrifice for Lucille, Daryl, and the pool table with all its accessories. Furthering his flair for the dramatic, he has Simon and Dwight unveil a coffin. Negan reveals that Sasha is inside and says he’ll kill her and everyone else (“probably”) if Rick doesn’t comply. Sasha’s nonlinear journey is somewhat frustrating in the episode. Most of those are still unnecessary, save for the more immediate events. As she gets into the coffin at the Sanctuary, she asks only for a glass of water. And while listening to one last song, she pops her suicide pill. Cut back to Alexandria, where Negan opens the coffin and is attacked by Walker Sasha. Her sacrifice opens the window for the Alexandrians not held at gunpoint to begin opening fire. Still, Rick is immobilized, and so too is Michonne, by the Scavenger sniper who was supposed to be her partner in crime. Rick tries to make an even better deal with Jadis, but she’s having none of it. She pops a shot in his hip and kicks him off the platform. Then she brings him to Negan, who has Carl on his knees and surrounded by a gang of Saviors. Once again, it’s monologue time for Negan. He outlines his fondness for Carl — “If I had a kid, I’d want him to be just like him” — but says he’s going to kill him in front of Rick, then cut off his arms. As this is happening, Michonne is in a fight for her life with the Scavenger. She’s nearly choked out when she gets a hit in, but still not safe. Rick then hears a woman’s screams from off- camera. Undeterred, and unwilling to return to his neutered self, he repeats his taunt from the Season 7 premiere, saying he will still kill him one day. In yet another twist, this one much more expected, Ezekiel and his regiment arrive just in time to spare Carl’s life and allow the war to continue. Shiva pounces on one of Negan’s henchman just as he pulls the bat behind his shoulders, ready to swing. Ezekiel, Morgan, and Carol all come in guns blazing, with the king delivering a properly dramatic decry: “Alexandria will not fall, not on this day.”The Scavengers flee, and eventually the Saviors are run out of Alexandria. Along the way we’re treated to some awesome action shots, particularly the pairings of Ezekiel and Carol and Rick and Morgan fighting alongside each other. The newly aligned army attempts to chase Negan and the rest of the Saviors, but a crew left behind is able to ward them off with gunfire and allow them to escape back to the Sanctuary. War is just getting started.“The First Day of the Rest of Your Life” — written by Scott M. Gimple, Angela Kang, and Matthew Negrete; and directed by Greg Nicotero — isn’t quite a perfect finale, but it’s damn fun and undeniably satisfying. My only real beef is with the gratuitous Sasha flashbacks and the indulgently sappy ending monologue from Maggie. While the Kingdom’s just- on- time arrival was to be expected, the Scavenger’s betrayal is the best twist the show has pulled off since first revealing that everyone who dies comes back as a walker. And in a show in which death has recently lost most of its power, Sasha’s death was a potent sacrifice, carrying far more weight than Glenn and Abraham’s (Michonne, though badly battered, survives, so no need to mourn two characters tonight). So was Season 7 redeemed? I wouldn’t go that far. The show’s penchant for stalling, over- manipulating, and biting off more than it can chew can’t be erased by one explosive finale. While the back half of this season was better than the first, it still suffered from those same issues. But going into yet another summer between seasons, we won’t be left with a bad taste in our mouths this time around. Like Sasha with her earbuds, we too get a sweet release. 2017 Foellinger Theatre Summer Concert/ Movie Series The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation will present a whole summer of entertainment again in 2017. Korean Movie Reviews for 2. The year 2. 01. 6 is one filled with anticipation for Korean cinema fans. With an unusually large number of high- profile directors getting ready to release new films, the level of local and international interest is already quite high. Inspired by Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith, and set in the colonial era of the 1. Cannes - - the first Korean film to receive that honor since 2. Also invited to Cannes in a high- profile out of competition slot was Na Hong- jin's creepy The Wailing, a film that for several years has been generating buzz among those who have read the screenplay. And not to be overlooked is Kim Jee- woon, whose colonial- era The Age of Shadows starring Song Kang- ho is scheduled for a release in the second half of the year. Although 2. 01. 5's Assassination was the first major commercial success for films set during this dark historical era, the trend only seems to be gaining strength. Two lower- budget films from early 2. Spirits' Homecoming and Dong- ju: The Portrait of a Poet, provoked much discussion and performed much better at the box- office than anyone anticipated. With more films like Ryoo Seung- wan's Battleship Island slated for 2. Such criticism might be justified, but on rare occasions, something truly unusual does still slip through the cracks. A quick look at the synopsis of Sori: Voice From the Heart confirms this. Although officially it's just an ordinary telecommunications satellite, in reality it's no such thing. Equipped with cutting- edge AI and voice recognition technology, it has been secretly tasked with tracking all phone conversations taking place down on earth. But eventually, the self- aware satellite figures out that the conversations it records are being used to target drone strikes in which innocent civilians are among the dead and wounded. Tormented, Sori decides to go AWOL. With Lulu, Gwendoline Christie, Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley. After attracting both media and police attention for accidentally knocking Kate Moss into the River.
For over a decade, he has been wandering the country in search of her. Everyone he knows insists that she was killed in a tragic subway fire in Daegu, even though her body was never recovered. Sori needs Hae- gwan's help to move around on land, particularly given that the machine's ultimate goal is to go to the Middle East. Hae- gwan, for his part, realizes that Sori's technology could help him find his daughter. The two become an unlikely team, searching across Korea and into past telephone records for a woman who seems to have vanished into thin air. But unbeknownst to them, various figures from the NSA, NASA and Korean intelligence services are searching desperately for the missing satellite. Sori: Voice From the Heart is a film filled with surprises. One of the surprises is that a story so eccentric and outlandish should end up working so well. It's true that sometimes, such as in the climactic sequence, the film spins a bit out of control. Scenes involving US or Korean intelligence figures can also feel silly at times. Nonetheless, for all its shifts in tone, the emotions in this film feel real. That sense of authenticity comes from the fact that the filmmakers are pushing boundaries from a creative standpoint, and also because second- time director Lee Ho- jae (The Scam) proves willing to tackle difficult emotional issues, such as grief and loss, in a direct way. There's a genuine beating heart at the center of this film. Of course, those familiar with actor Lee Sung- min (Broken, Venus Talk), who after a long career as a supporting actor is now emerging into the spotlight, might be less surprised. Lee has tremendous range as an actor, including numerous roles as calculating villains (The Piper, A Violent Prosecutor), but he seems most effective in roles like this where he portrays an ordinary person dealing with ordinary (if very tragic) life experiences. When you look at all the pieces that make up Sori: Voice From the Heart, it seems inconceivable that they might all fit together to make a coherent movie. But somehow, director Lee manages to keep everything from flying apart, and the result is a truly original and engaging story. The police and various new agencies attempt to unlock the mystery behind the circumstances in which a number of people, including Hye- ri's cameraman assistant Seok- hoon (Lee Hyun- wook, The Target), were brutally murdered at an isolated island, leaving Hye- ri as the only living witness. The key evidence is the interview footage left in Seok- hoon's camcorder, smashed but recovered later. As the main body of the film reconstructs the investigating reporter's attempts to penetrate the veil of secrecy that seems to permeate the island community, we learn that the island's main source of income, a salt harvesting business owned by the Heo family (Choi Il- hwa, New World, as the serpentine father and Ryoo Joon- yeol, Socialphobia, as the callous, violent son) might have been practicing modern- day slave labor. Hye- ri repeatedly approaches one of the salt- field workers, Sang- ho (Bai Song- woo, Veteran), who seems to be mentally disadvantaged and shows signs of severe physical abuse, and tries to get him to acknowledge on camera the horrid treatment he has been subject to. However, a check with Sang- ho's missing- person status leads to a shocking revelation for which neither Hye- ri nor Seok- hoon is prepared. No Tomorrow is loosely based on an actual case in which a Cholla Province saltern owner was accused in 2. Co- written and directed by Lee Ji- Seung, who had previously helmed the low- rent revenge thriller Azooma (2. No Tomorrow starts off like a work- print for a . Except for occasional, air- clearing shots of beautiful beachfronts and surfs, everything Seok- hoon films looks suitably cruddy, grimy and oppressive: soon, the found footage gimmick becomes, what can I say, boring and exhausting, stripping the film of any emotional connection. As for the plot twist, while it does rescue the film to a certain degree from sinking into the swamp of torpor, it again reveals director Lee's inability to fully work out moral calculus of his project (as was the case with Azooma, one of those ethical- dilemmas- be- damned Korean thrillers that think they are scoring . It did not seem to have occurred to him that screwing the film's trajectory like that in effect degrades the meaning of Hye- ri's hard work in the first half, reducing her to a pawn in the filmmaker's one- upmanship against the viewer's expectations. As it stands, the film is fundamentally uninvolving, not because its agendas are murky, but because its characterization is so thin. Bae Song- woo is also fine as the beaten- down Sang- ho, taking care to dial down his patented reptilian bad- guy ticks and reaching for the viewer's pity, if not sympathy. Unfortunately, Bae's presence reminds us of his memorably villainous turn in Bedevilled (2. No Tomorrow is not a complete wash, but is (again) unable to overcome one of the frustrating contradictions of the contemporary Korean thriller cinema: their post- Memories of Murder obsession with . Korean screenwriters shooting for crime/topical thrillers, in my view, should stop worrying about . Swimming at a pace far beyond any of his competitors, he is South Korea's greatest hope for medal glory in the upcoming Olympics. But underneath his cocky, self- assured exterior is a volatility and lack of judgement that causes conflict with his coach, and threatens his success. The boy, Joon- ho, shows some talent for swimming, but in competitions he continually places 4th. Desperate to improve her son's performance and open up a path to a swimming scholarship, the mother seeks out Gwang- soo, despite his reputation for being unreasonably harsh to his students. It's a story about parents, teachers and children, and more generally about the pressure placed on young children to succeed. How much pain and misery is worth enduring for a shot at success? And what is the line that separates pressure from abuse? The fact that it is produced and financed by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea only reinforces this first impression. But soon after the film starts, it becomes clear that Fourth Place is more nuanced than a simple issue film. It inspires you to think, but it does not tell you what to think. There is a world of difference between the young, confident Gwang- soo who looks capable of anything, and the haunted, angry person he becomes later in life. Actor Park Hae- jun makes little effort to make his character likeable, but having seen what he was in his youth changes the way that we look at him. Yoo Jae- sang portrays Joon- ho as a quiet boy who nonetheless betrays hints of a rich inner life. At no time does he come across as a one- dimensional victim. Finally Lee Hang- na, who plays Joon- ho's mother, brings a desperate intensity to her performance that suggests how much pressure she herself feels in a society that surely ranks among the world's most competitive. One senses that she is causing harm to her son, but there is also love mixed in with her actions. The convincingly ordinary setting and lesser degree of visual ornament is a change of pace for director Jung Ji- woo, who is accustomed to working on mainstream projects with major stars. But the artistic sensibility that is present in all of his films comes through particularly strong in Fourth Place, giving the work an unusual emotional intensity. He has taken advantage of the low- budget format to make a film that is more serious, but no less gripping, than a mainstream commercial feature. So in Korea, the effort to make children feel happier is more than just a project for individual families, but a broader social and political issue. Fourth Place demonstrates many of the complexities and challenges involved in addressing this problem, but the very fact that it exists can perhaps serve as a note of encouragement. Best Horror Movies of All Time - Top Ten List. The Top Ten. 1The Exorcist. By far best of this genre ever. Even if you ignore the gruesome special effects, the movie was still superbly acted and directed. Everything else is distant second. By far the one that stands out. I watched it ONE time and have never watched it again and I'm 4. Other movies about possession don't bother me, to a point, as much as this one did. Deservedly so, Aliens is in the top 1. Poltergeist (the clown scene) is the still the reason I can't STAND clowns to this day. The next most disgusting websites is one that features one of the grossest objects on earth – the human body. The website is titled.IT should be higher as well. Paranormal Activity (1) deserves it's spot as that movie kept me on the edge of my seat and my wife afraid to sleep at night! JAWS needs to be higher on the list.. Great directing, acting, etc. Plus I was afraid to go in the ocean for years after seeing it in the theater! Awesome one. Overrated - lolsy. V 1. 34 Comments. Halloween. Come on people Halloween is the best one out of all the others because Michael Myers is pure evil! You'll all see what I'm talking about after 0. Halloween indeed is the creator of all slasher films, if it wasn't 4 this movie.. Nightmare on elm street, friday the 1. So think again and vote for Halloween. The slasher genre wouldn't exist if not for this John Carpenter masterpiece. Watch the original before you judge. By far the best, honestly I think it surpasses the horror list and goes straight to the list of greatest films of all time. Don't let the all the sequels and spin- offs tarnish this classic. Amazing. V 3. 9 Comments. The Shining. This movie is great! People are voting for other movies because there scarier but this is not about being scary, its about being good. And this movie tops the whole list! Other great horror movies are The Exorcist, Black Christmas, High Tension, Halloween, Alien, Evil Dead, A nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, Poltergeist, Misery, The Cabin In The Woods, REC, Jaws, Dead Alive, Carrie, An American Werewolf in London and Psycho. What people don't realize how great The Shining is looking at the pure horror outlook of it or just looking at how incredible it is nonetheless. People will rip on it and say it was nothing like the book, but every time I watch the shining it just brings me back, it's like a journey. Not only did it have a suspensive intriguing story, but it had incredible directing by my all time favorite director, Stanley Kubrick, was shot at a really interesting setting; The Timberline Lodge known as the Overlook hotel, and had some incredible actors in it that all did great such as Jack Nicholson, Scatman Crothers, Joe Turkel, and Philip Stone. Now beside from it being in the Horror genre (my favorite), the movie is still one of my all time favorites without question, and when you look at it, all these supernatural and Slasher films don't stand a chance.
This movie is the type that after you watch it you're thinking it's bad but then all of a sudden you're too afraid to move! Now. Heeres Johnny! V 6. 0 Comments. 4A Nightmare on Elm Street. Silence of the Lambs wasn't even scary to me. Kill List is a 2011 British crime drama psychological horror film directed by Ben Wheatley, co-written and co-edited with Amy Jump, and starring Neil Maskell, MyAnna. The Exorcist. The seminal possession film to end all possession films is a no-brainer for any horror list with “memorable” in the title, right? I actually laughed at one point. THIS will scare you. You won't be able to sleep. I had a nightmare with him in it when I LEAST expected. That's why I'm typing this as a ghost. Or something. T. What's wrong with this top 1. Straight to DVD films and remakes? And let's not forget a certain over- appreciated gore franchise that spawned 7 agonizing sequels.. Oh yeah Alien is awesome. Best movie monster ever conjured and one of the most suspenseful movies ever made with imagery that haunts to this day. This list has seem to have forgotten there's a difference between being the greatest and being the scariest. This movie is great AND it is scary. That is a big enough accomplishment to earn it top five status. That's a problem. Greatest Horror Movie Of All Time How Could You Question Its Greatness? This Is Greatest Horror Movies Right? No horror movie compares to this. The movie itself doesn't throw countless buckets of gore at you, so when the movie actually does use gore, they use it very effectively and it can scare you much more. This movie also never had a dull moment in my opinion. The movie is one of the few movies that I can say never gets a bit uninteresting. With the help of genius characters and dialogue, the movie boils a slowly growing feeling of suspense, and that feeling stays for the whole movie. On top of all of this, it doesn't feel the need to drench you with horror cliches and unoriginal plot points. This movie is a true original. Not only are the plot and characters very twisted and disturbing, but you can also clearly tell the plot was very carefully mapped out and must have took an extreme amount of effort. All these elements put together and you have a cinematic gen and a horror classic that will be remembered for all of eternity. It won film of the year, no other horror has done that, therefore this is the best. Scary for all the right reasons and a story that has quality, who could ask for more. Gore and lots of blood is nice, like Evil Dead, Saw, Friday the 1. The best horror movies are those with fewer blood and no gore, like The Shining, It, Alien, Psycho, Rosemary's Baby.. Silence of the Lambs is upper- class. Levine and Hopkins. Best role of those 2. Lecter is downright scary, while Bill is.. Also scary. Jodie Foster and the rest of the cast were near perfection. To conclude, the dialogue was excellent. Silence of the Lambs deserves a top 3 spot. Anthony Hopkins had completed this movie. This is the best physiological thrillers of all time and it should be in the top five instead of 7! V 2. 5 Comments. 8Scream. This movie totally gave the slasher genre (and really all horror) new life and started a new trend of smart suspense- driven horror movies. The entire franchise is classic! Amazing movie, much suspense. Way better than friday the thirteenth. This is my best movie at all bit I don't think that's a horror movie but it's still best than friday 1. Overrated - lolsy. V 2. 8 Comments. 9Saw. It's ah- may- zing! Who doesn't want to watch a lot of torture in one movie that has such a great plot if you take the time to watch it?! Saw is not necessarily the scariest movie, but it is a GREAT movie if you want to see some gore. The story is also very good for it being 7 movies long. The end was such a twist, I loved it. The reverse bear trap was the BEST, its too bad we don't see it actually work until the second time. This movie deserves to be on the top ten. Original, Creative, Entertaining, Full of Suspense, Intriguing, Well Acted, Shocking.. What else can you ask for in a movie? Also, has one of the greatest villains of all time, and not only villain but character (the amazing Jigsaw). In short, A MASTERPIECE! I have to agree best movie ever but saw 6 is better. V 6. 0 Comments. 10. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1. Okay, most films in the top ten deserve to be there but I'm sorry, this is THE best horror film. It works outside of the horror genre as a film itself. Maybe some films are scarier, but this was revolutionary in it's time. The makers of this films were daring, this film pushed boundaries and is an absolutely iconic piece of art. Horror movies don't scare me, I have a dark sense of humour so I usually laugh at them. Voting Chainsaw Massacre because Leather face was inspired by real life killer, Edward Gein. I think you mean WILL be the scariest experience of your entire life! Especially when that guys head comes of and starts crawling like a spider that was amazing. Should be number 2 on this list just most people don't know how gory this film is. The movie gives off a strong sense of paranoia because they don't know who has been infected with the thing/alien life form at any given moment. This paranoia is demonstrated by phenomenal and realistic acting. Not to mention the special effects for this movie is off the charts, especially considering it was released in 1. The greatest film of all time! The special effects are great! I personally think that there isn't a horror film like it. No one is safe because they don't trust each other! Definitely watch this! The best - lolsy. V 2. 6 Comments. 12. Paranormal Activity. PA1 scared you, whether you admit it or not. Now PA2, PA3, PA4 and I'm sure the uneagerly expected PA5 are quite different stories. They were pumped out as fast as Mel B pumps out kids. No thought to the story & terrible, terrible acting.. Now the acting in the first WAS sub- par, but it didn't affect the overall movie in such a huge way it was unwatchable, unlike the other three. Please dear god. But back to the point, great movie. Kept most of us up googling demonology and eye witness accounts of ghosts, I think. This was scary as hell doors slamming lights turning on footprints in the talcum powder and the guy thrown at the camera at the end it is scary as hell! Very good movie, its pretty scary : =)This movie was good happy they made the sequels. V 3. 0 Comments. 13. Jaws. So sharks don't really kill a lot of people but you probably thought twice about jumping in the water. It wasn't that scary, besides the fact you didn't want to go in the ocean, but this list is about the best horror movies not the scariest and this was a great movie and should be higher on the list. This movie had a very high budget when it came out and many people liked it. It definitely made a lot of people afraid to go into the water. It has a 9. 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It wasn't scary but still fits in to horror- and the best of them. V 2. 1 Comments. 14. Friday the 1. 3th. I grow up watching scary movies and Friday the 1. I seen I never wanted to go to summer camp after watching these movies. Far scarier than half of the films above it. I'd think it twice before going on a camp now. I think the key elements of this movie was the fact that you don't know what or who the hell is Jason till the end of the film. And then you kinda regret finding out. Its brilliance, magnificent piece of horror film- making. Should be on the top 5. THIS IS A CLASSIC I RECOMMEND THE 2. VERSION KILLER CUT.. It left me shaking. Great 8. 0s B- Horror Movies That Are Worth Your Time « Taste of Cinema. The term B movie was first coined in Hollywood’s Golden Age which ran from the 1. Double features were the norm, showing a main feature, usually a big budget studio picture with star names, and a B movie afterwards. The B movie would usually have a much smaller budget and no star names. The films were usually genre pictures: westerns, science- fiction and horror being the most popular. At the end of the 1. B movies, nevertheless, the term B movie stuck and is still used today. Generally referring to a low- budget film that lacks artistic ambition, instead trying to please its audience with spectacle, titillation and violence. In the 1. 96. 0’s and 7. B movie. When the Hollywood Production Code was abolished, filmmakers were free to push the boundaries of decency and good taste to the limit. These films were shown in what’s became known as Grindhouse cinemas across America. These cinemas were generally in the rough part of town and had no inhibitions to the type of films they showed, giving B moviemakers the freedom to make anything their deranged imaginations could come up with. By the 1. 98. 0’s, home video and cable movie channels had arrived, this spelt the death of the Grindhouse cinema. The explosion of the video rental market meant the B horror movies flourished like never before or since. The films reflected the times, in the 7. B horror movies were grim and nihilistic, like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1. The Hills Have Eyes” (1. In the 8. 0’s they were bright, colourful and a lot more fun. They featured heaps of neon lights, over the top particle effects and musical scores filled with synthesises and rock music. The most notable change was the inclusion of comedy, especially among the lower budgeted films, this might have been done to appeal to a larger audience, or perhaps to compensate for cheap special effects that couldn’t be taken seriously anyway. The phenomenal success of “Jaws” (1. Star Wars” (1. 97. B movie subject matter. A film about a giant murderous shark and a space opera were traditionally B movie subjects. In the eighties science fiction and horror became mainstream, B movies had to offer something different, so their subject matter and plots became more extreme and more bizarre. The definition of a B movie remains ambiguous. Some people might consider all horror films to be B movies. For a horror film to be classified as a B movie, it needs to be produced on a low- budget, by an independent studio, and it also needs a unique concept. A concept so outrageous or grotesque that the major studios would never dare attempt to produce it. We have sifted through a large mountain of old VHS tapes to find some unpolished gems that are waiting to be rediscovered. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (Stephen Chiodo, 1. Tagline: In space no one can eat ice- cream. A brilliantly original concept that is efficiently summed up in the film’s title. A race of aliens who happen to resemble clowns, and travel across the galaxy in a spaceship that looks like a giant big top. They arrive in a small sleepy town intent on harvesting its inhabitants for sustenance. The film is essentially a string of visual circus gags connected by a thin thread of a story. The gags involve cotton candy cocoons, acid pies and lethal puppet shows. All ending with the demise of unwitting town folk. The films is made by The Chiodo Brothers, special effects artists who made their name working on films such as “Critters” (1. This was their first and last directorial effort. The Klown puppets are marvellously done, they are cheerfully creepy and deeply sinister. They have gritty worn pockmarked faces and evil grins that make them the stuff of nightmares. Despite this the Klowns are engaging and entertaining. The human cast are pretty forgettable with the exception of John Vernon, who plays a grumpy cynical police officer, who believes the entire invasion is one big practical joke being played on him. The film has a gleefully surreal tone, a pitch black sense of humour, and is mostly played for laughs. The plot is a homage to the B movies of the fifties, only instead of pod people you’ve got psychotic alien clowns. Chopping Mall (Jim Wynorski, 1. Tagline: Where shopping costs you an arm and a leg. A large shopping mall decides it’s a good idea to invest in a new state of the art security system. The system is comprised of gigantic steel security shutters and three high- tech robots that can patrol the mall, and shoot laser beams to stun or kill would- be thieves. Eight teenagers who work in the mall decide to have an after- hours party in a furniture store. Outside there’s a massive thunder storm, the mall is stuck by lightening, short circuiting the new security system and sending the robot security guards into kill mode. The group of teenagers, who have been drinking and partying in the furniture store, start being hunted down and picked off by the new security guards. The film is undeniably goofy and while it’s never meant to be taken too seriously, it’s made with real focus and purpose. It tries its best to entertain and thrill its audience and never resorts to mocking itself like so many modern horror films. The robots themselves look like beefed up militarised versions of Johnny 5 from “Short Circuit” (1. Although most of the time the robots come across as comical, there are moments when they are genuinely menacing. Once again, the human cast are pretty forgettable and are only memorable for the manner of their deaths. An exploding head being the one that sticks in the mind. The film is produced by B movie legend Rodger Corman. The energy and invention associated with his films are undeniably present in this production. Strange Behaviour (Michael Laughlin, 1. Tageline: Good kids turned killers. Set in small town American. The local high school students have found a quick and easy way of making some money, they volunteer as test subjects for the local universities psychology department. Unfortunately, the treatment appears to turn them into machine like killers that can be programmed on demand. The local sheriff (Michael Murphy) has a vendetta against the universities psychology department, who he blames for the death of his wife. The latest students to be turned into a brainwashed killer just so happens to be the sheriff’s son. Director Michael Laughlin intended this as a homage to fifties B movie horror. It was meant to be part of a trilogy, which was never completed. The film successfully combines the eighties slasher with the mad scientist films of the fifties. The cast is surprisingly competent, Fiona Lewis stands out as the, equally alluring and terrifying, head of research, who lobotomises and brainwashes teenage boys for fun. The film has some genuinely surreal and creepy moments that are reminiscent of the early work of David Cronenberg. There are other little touches that set it apart from its contemporaries, like a killer who wanders around in a Tor Johnson mask, a murder scene shown entirely through shadow- play, and an impromptu dance sequence at a teenage costume party. Class of Nuke’ Em High (Richard W. Haines, Lloyd Kaufman, 1. Tagline: Readin’ Writin’ and Radiation. Troma Pictures is a legendary B movie studio founded in the middle of the sixties exploitation era. Although their most successful period was in the eighties, with their best known film being “The Toxic Avenger” (1. They took B movies to the next level of automatism and absurdity. Tromoville High School is situated right next door to a nuclear power plant. Needless to say the students have been acting strangely. The school honour society has transformed into a gang of punk rock thugs, who terrorise their fellow students with impunity and sell them radioactive drugs. These drugs are grown in the yard of the nuclear plant. The toxic drugs have radical effects on the student population, giving them heavy- duty hallucinations and radioactive super strength. There is also a creature growing in a vat of nuclear waste in the schools basement. There was an idea at the time that punk rock signalled a terminal stage in the decline of western civilisation. The films punk rocker thugs seem to embody this idea, a cautionary example of what exposure to toxic chemicals might do to the youth of America. Although, nothing in the film should be taken seriously. The film is a farcical take on the high school experience and radioactive contamination. The performances in the film are so over the top they transform form just being bad to almost becoming performance art. The film has a manic energy, loads of over the top gore, and a light touch that keeps it humorous and entertaining. Ghost Town (Richard Governor, 1. Tagline: The good. The satanic. The film is an interesting fusion of genres and concepts, a horror western with some time- travel thrown in. A runaway bride’s car breaks down in the desert. She is abducted in a mysterious and supernatural sand storm. A local lawman (Franc Luz) finds her abandon car, as he continues to search for her in the desert he comes across an abandoned ghost town. Although it’s not really abandon, is populated by dozens of ghosts. A curse was put on the town, a hundred years ago, when its sheriff was brutally murdered by a wicked outlaw named Devlin (Jimmie F Skaggs). The outlaw and his gang still hold the townspeople hostage in a cycle of fear. This is a forgotten B movie gem with a unique concept. Horror westerns are rare and seldom work, but in this instance they are able to find the right balance. The film is notable for its excellent cinematography that combines a Sergio Leone feel with an unworldly haunting atmosphere. There are some great eerie scenes where the dead town folk wander the desert wasteland lost in limbo. The plot is that of a familiar western, where an evil tyrant terrorises a small town, only in this case he’s dead with supernatural powers. There are a few decent scares infused with plenty of gun slinging action. I, Madman (Tibor Takacs, 1. |
